Program Overview

The Ecole Polytechnique Master of Science and Technology in Artificial Intelligence and advanced Visual Computing is a two-year program, entirely taught in English and designed for highly qualified and internationally oriented students. It provides you with an in-depth understanding of the most recent techniques in artificial intelligence and teaches you to implement them efficiently.

This research-oriented program is at the heart of digital science and its latest, most promising applications. Its curriculum comprises two complementary branches, namely Artificial Intelligence and Visual Computing. The first branch takes into account statistical learning and data analysis, while the second looks at 3D computer graphics, virtual and augmented reality, multimodal interaction, computer vision, robotics, and 3D manufacturing.

The Program offers high-level scientific classes taught by faculty from Ecole Polytechnique and partner companies.

About Artificial Intelligence and advanced Visual Computing

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to intelligent systems that can independently perform tasks that were originally restricted to humans (such as decision-making and creation). AI is based on two complementary approaches: Traditional AI (modeling existing knowledge and reasoning mechanisms in an efficient way) and machine learning (systems that gain knowledge on their own, either with training examples or instantly, with the use of reinforcement learning).

Visual Computing (ViC) involves processing multimedia content (i.e. images, sounds, videos and 3D content). The multiplicity of online media has resulted in a significant need to create, analyze, and edit. Advanced Visual Computing both illustrates AI content and raises new challenges for the field.

Program Structure

The Artificial Intelligence and advanced Visual Computing Master’s provides students with the keys to become the next creators of innovative applications, using artificial intelligence and visual computing.

Year 1 includes classes on Imaging Techniques, Computer Animation, Machine Learning, Image Analysis, and Statistics, to name a few. The year then ends with a four- to five-month internship.

Year 2 involves more in-depth classes in machine learning (deep learning and reinforcement learning). Classes include High-dimensional Data Analysis, Computer Vision, Advanced 3D Graphics, Natural Language and Speech Processing, and Socio-emotional Embodied Conversational Agents.
You will also become familiar with ethical issues and law, and novel applications of Artificial Intelligence and Visual Computing, through weekly seminars with keynote talks from academic and industrial partners.

Transverse project: You will spend half a day per week working on a transverse project, aiming to find solutions to a significant issue raised by either an industrial partner or a researcher in a domain covered by the program.

The Master’s ends with a final internship. For five to six months, you will work on a project, either at a company R&D center or a research lab.  The Master’s Program has developed strong collaborations with world-class partners in industry, all of which are glad to welcome our students for their internships.

Thanks to the AI-VIC master, I got an internship at where I was lucky to have a chance to publish my first publication at ICCV 2021 which is one of the top conferences in computer vision and machine learning. One thing that I am very thankful for is the good mix of both practical and theoretical skills in the program e.g. reading research papers, programming, working with others… so that I am productive since the first day of my internship and PhD.

Career Prospects

A rapidly growing number of companies are looking for researchers and engineers who are able to create new original computationally competitive AI algorithms. The particular focus put on visual computing in this training will naturally lead students toward applications related to image processing, virtual worlds, conversational agents or drone navigation.

The Artificial Intelligence and Visual Computing Master’s combines both research and professional experience. After graduating, students can either pursue PhD study at a French or foreign research lab, or work for companies and start-ups across a range of industries:

  • Digital applications for smartphones, computers, or personal assistants: Shazam
  • Control of autonomous vehicles, drones and robots: Valeo, BMW
  • Virtual reality, image and video editing, design and simulation of 3D virtual worlds: Ubisoft, Dassault Systems, Microsoft, Adobe, Sony, Nintendo
  • E-commerce and online advertisement: Criteo, Teads, Cdiscount, FNAC, eBay, Microsoft, Ubisoft

Many of our current students also choose to do a PhD after the Master’s Program.
