Students admitted to the International Academic Exchange Program as part of a partnership between Ecole Polytechnique and their home institution are exempt from paying tuition fees. However, students must first be officially nominated by their home institution in order to benefit from this status. This includes Erasmus+ students.

Visiting students admitted to the exchange program are required to pay tuition fees as indicated in the table.

On-campus services

  • The International Student Support and Services Office (BASIX) at École Polytechnique supports international students, assisting them with required administrative formalities such as visas, health insurance and accommodation. Once admitted, each student will receive an email with all information to prepare for arrival on campus.

  • The medical center of École Polytechnique is divided into four entities: a medical service, a preventive care service, a psychology service and a social service. The École Polytechnique campus offers many other services. For more information, click here.

Accommodation

The École polytechnique offers exchange students access to student residences on campus, according to availability. Please note that on-campus accommodation is not guaranteed. The assignment of accommodation is confirmed shortly after admission to the international academic exchange program or the research program for international talents.

Should it not be possible to offer accommodation to all students requesting it, the École polytechnique will provide the necessary information to help students find their own accommodation.

Estimated costs of living

Preparing for your exchange period also means preparing your budget!

To avoid unpleasant surprises, we recommend that you plan your budget before your exchange period, as the cost of living in the Paris region can be higher than in your home country.

On-Campus Accomodation

€800 per month is the estimated amount required to cover all major living costs, including accommodation on-campus, food, health insurance, study materials and transport.

Off-Campus Accommodation

Renting accommodation outside the Ecole Polytechnique campus is generally more expensive. Rates depend on size and location, and can range from €600 per month to over €1,000 per month. If you do not wish to live on campus or have not been allocated accommodation, we advise you to start your search as soon as possible.

Personal expenses

Your budget should also take into account clothing (warm winter clothes, sports gear), transport, cell phone and internet costs, according to your own needs and lifestyle. As for your social life, student-run organizations organize plenty of inexpensive or free activities on campus, so make sure to get more information when you arrive. To help you, this table allows you to visualize anticipated expenses. We recommend that you adapt it to your situation and fill it in accordingly.

Health Insurance

All students staying in France for at least 6 months must be affiliated to the French Healthcare System.
Applicants who are EU citizens have to ask for a European Health Insurance Card to the Health Insurance Company of their 2 months before arriving in France.

Liability Insurance

People living in France must be affiliated to the liability insurance (coverage in case of accidents, third-party damage, ..). Students can have an insurance from their home country, or get one upon the arrival on Campus, with the Basix’s  guidance.

Visa

Depending on the country, students may need an entry visa or a study permit. Applicants who are not EU citizens require a visa to study in France.

Exchange students are responsible for their own visa applications and for joining us with the right visa. For more information, please contact your local French Consulate.
